RobiSolo-L: A Mobile Manipulation Platform for Precision Automation and Smart Manufacturing

Modern manufacturing and logistics environments increasingly require automation systems that can move beyond fixed workstations. Traditional industrial robotic arms provide excellent precision and repeatability, but their operating range is often limited by fixed mounting structures, dedicated work cells, and predefined production layouts. Autonomous mobile robots, on the other hand, can move between different work areas but typically lack the precision and manipulation capabilities required for complex industrial tasks.

RobiSolo-L combines these two capabilities into a single mobile manipulation platform. By integrating a 6-axis robotic arm with an autonomous differential-drive mobile base and a motorized vertical lifting mechanism, RobiSolo-L extends robotic manipulation beyond a fixed workspace. The platform is designed for material handling, pick-and-place operations, assembly, warehouse automation, and other applications where both mobility and precise manipulation are required.

At the center of RobiSolo-L is a 6-axis robotic arm designed for precision manipulation. With positioning accuracy down to approximately 1 cm according to the configured system, the arm can perform a wide range of industrial operations including material handling, assembly, sorting, and pick-and-place tasks. The 6-degree-of-freedom architecture provides the flexibility required to approach objects from different orientations while maintaining a compact overall footprint.

The manipulator is mounted on a motorized vertical lifting platform with up to 1000 mm of vertical travel1000 mm Vertical Lift. This additional axis significantly expands the robot's effective workspace, allowing the same robotic arm to operate at different working heights without requiring a fixed gantry or additional mechanical infrastructure. In warehouse environments, this enables access to different rack levels; in manufacturing environments, the lifting mechanism can adapt the arm to workstations positioned at different heights.

The combination of six-axis manipulation and vertical motion creates a much larger operational envelope than a conventional mobile robotic arm mounted directly to a chassis. Instead of designing the entire production environment around a fixed robot, RobiSolo-L can dynamically position its manipulation system according to the task. This allows one platform to serve multiple workstations, storage locations, or material handling points, reducing the need for dedicated robotic infrastructure.

Mobility is provided by a four-wheel differential-drive mobile base equipped with brushless DC hub motors. The platform supports in-place rotation with a zero turning radius, allowing RobiSolo-L to maneuver in confined factory aisles, warehouse spaces, and work cells. With a maximum speed of 1.5 m/s, the mobile base can efficiently transport the manipulation system and payload between different operating areas while maintaining the maneuverability required for indoor automation.

The mobile platform supports point-to-point navigation, fixed-route navigation, and trajectory-based operation. Its navigation system combines onboard positioning and perception technologies to support autonomous movement and obstacle handling in dynamic environments. Navigation accuracy can reach approximately ±50 mm, with auxiliary positioning accuracy of approximately ±10 mm depending on the configured positioning system and operating environment.

For autonomous operation, RobiSolo-L integrates LiDAR-based environmental perception with additional positioning and sensing technologies. High-precision LiDAR navigation provides the robot with spatial information required for localization, mapping, path planning, and obstacle detection. The platform can also integrate additional sensors according to application requirements, allowing developers to configure the perception system for different factory layouts, warehouse environments, or research scenarios.

The system supports obstacle stopping and obstacle avoidance, enabling the mobile platform to respond to objects encountered during navigation. Combined with SLAM and autonomous navigation algorithms, this allows RobiSolo-L to operate without requiring every movement to be manually controlled. Developers can configure navigation behaviors according to the requirements of the application, from fixed routes to point-to-point transportation and more complex autonomous trajectories.

While navigation determines where RobiSolo-L can operate, its manipulation system determines what it can do after reaching the target location. The platform supports multi-modal grasping and can be configured for different end-effectors and application-specific tools. This makes it suitable for handling boxes, components, containers, and other industrial materials. The combination of mobile positioning and robotic manipulation allows the same system to transport an object to a destination and then perform a precise pick-and-place operation without requiring a separate fixed robotic cell.

RobiSolo-L is also designed as an open development platform rather than a closed automation system. The robot supports ROS, Windows, and Ubuntu, while software interfaces based on MQTT provide a communication layer for navigation and system integration. Developers can use ROS-based tools and custom software to implement navigation, manipulation, perception, and task-planning algorithms. External power interfaces and multiple emergency-stop mechanisms further support integration into research and industrial environments.

The platform is designed to support substantial loads required for industrial automation. The mobile chassis provides a vertical load capacity of up to 120 kg, while the overall system can be configured according to the requirements of the mounted robotic arm and application payload. The chassis uses a Q235 steel structure and is equipped with 4096-line encoder feedback for motion control. This provides a robust mechanical foundation for continuous operation in manufacturing and logistics environments.

Continuous operation is supported by an expandable 24 V 20 Ah lithium battery system, with a theoretical operating time of more than four hours depending on the configuration and operating conditions. The battery capacity can be expanded according to the application's runtime requirements. With a charging time of less than three hours, the platform can be integrated into repeated operation cycles for research, material handling, and industrial automation tasks.

RobiSolo-L also incorporates multiple emergency-stop mechanisms, including remote, hardware, and software emergency stops. Combined with remote control through a 2.4 GHz controller and autonomous navigation capabilities, these functions provide multiple control modes for development, testing, and operational deployment.

The modular architecture of RobiSolo-L makes it suitable for a broad range of applications. In smart manufacturing, the platform can move between workstations and perform automated material handling or assembly operations. In warehouse environments, the combination of autonomous navigation and a 1000 mm lifting platform allows the robot to access materials at different heights while reducing dependence on fixed automation infrastructure. In logistics applications, the mobile base can transport materials between designated locations before the robotic arm performs loading or unloading operations.

The key advantage of RobiSolo-L lies in the integration of three capabilities that are traditionally implemented as separate systems: autonomous mobility, vertical positioning, and precision manipulation. The mobile base determines where the robot can operate, the lifting mechanism expands its reachable workspace, and the six-axis arm provides the dexterity required to interact with objects. Together, these systems create a mobile automation platform capable of moving through an environment, positioning itself at the required working height, and executing manipulation tasks at the destination.

As manufacturing and logistics systems become increasingly flexible, automation equipment must be able to adapt to changing layouts, multiple workstations, and variable task requirements. Fixed robotic cells remain highly effective for repetitive high-volume operations, but mobile manipulation provides a different approach: bringing robotic capabilities directly to the location where work needs to be performed.

RobiSolo-L was developed around this principle. By combining a precision 6-axis robotic arm, 1000 mm motorized vertical lift, autonomous mobile navigation, LiDAR-based perception, and an open software architecture, it provides a flexible foundation for next-generation industrial automation. Whether used for material handling, warehouse operations, assembly, or robotics research, RobiSolo-L enables developers and automation teams to move beyond fixed robotic workspaces and build more adaptable mobile manipulation systems.
